Ride Report - May 2017Dargo

Ride #289  Brass Monkey ride - Dargo

Well folks, the 2017 Brass Monkey ride has been and done with Dargo being the place of choice for an overnighter. The number of members willing to brave the cold seems to be diminishing, but these are the ones that breved it. Ride Leader was El Presidente, Eric Belot, and other die hards were, Laurie Martin, Greg Nixon, Bob Versteegen, Dale Hendy, Col Dyos, Scott Papeneux, and me, Georg Berk at the tail end.

Met a 9.00 o'clock with coffees and catch ups, briefing by Eric and on the road by 9.40. Weather didn't look much, cold with impending showers, but that's the beauty of an Autumn ride.

Straight forward rin to Noojee and then to the Icy Creek Rd. Eric signals for the corner marker, but Col must've though he was just being wave on and decides to continue on to Baw Baw. The rest continue on as planned while Eric has to go fetch. This causes some delay and some mirth while the rest of us enjoy morno's at Willow Grove. Some showers on the way so far, but nothing to dampen our spirits. Eventually we regroup, on to Tyers for fuel then Maffra for Lunch. Good break then ready for the final leg.

The weather has improved and the ride to Dargo was just superb. Dry roads, good condition, little if any traffic, great ride enjoyed by all. Arrived at Dargo about 3.30 and got ourselves settled in.

Accommodation was a log cabin which was sparse at best, but we're only there for a night and at least the bikes were under cover. Time to settle in for some drinks, good food, fellowship, more drinks then sleep.

Early start with some heavy heads, El Presidente had decided in the haze of the evening that going home via the Dargo High Plains and Mt. Hotham seemed a good idea. Another week and the road would be closed for winter. The morning started with lots of fog and only 3 degrees. Where were all the brave GS riders? Only one on this trip. Some, (me), not happy with this idea. We left by 9, it was still only 3 degrees, but the fog had lifted a bit.

We eventually all got through although some slower than others, and I was not the slowest. The road wasn't too bad, weather was fine over the top and only got foggy again near the top. Temperature had warmed up to a balmy 4 degrees.

On to Bright for some mornos, by now lunch time. Got going again to refuel at Myrtleford, and once again, no Col. Where was he? No one saw him turn off or where he got to. Maybe he missed the turn and went to Mt. Buffalo? We decide to move on after waiting some time. eventually we get a message that he'll make his own way home. On then to Mansfield via Whitfield, some minor showers, but good ride nonetheless.

Final break at Mansfield, saying goodbyes and ready for the different routes home. Eventually all got home well, but poor ol' Col, got home about 8.00, and aside from having got lost, also lost his wallet and phone. Still everone was safe and well.

Thanks Eric for organising another great ride.
